Dinner at Chez Spencer, San Francisco, CA

We decided to try Chez Spencer, a restaurant that had been on our to-do list for a while, as a nice way to break in the new week. For the most part, it was good, but there were a few disappointments along the way. The atmosphere was warm, inviting and slightly modern in an old-fashioned sort of way and the waitress was very friendly and attentive in an unobtrusive way.

Roasted Cauliflower Soup with Toasted Sunflower Seeds $7
The soup itself was lacking in salt and could have been a bit smoother. But the texture contrast of the seeds was very nice.

Boulliabaise $7
This was more of a tomato bisque made with fish stock than a boulliabaise, but it was tasty.

Veal Sweetbreads with Mache in a Truffle Vinagrette $14
The sweetbreads were firm and supple and the sauce was amazing with the perfect amount of viscosity.

Seared Scallops with Hearts of Palm $17
The scallops were good, but there wasn't anything too interesting flavorwise going on in this dish.

Grilled Flat Iron Steak with Morels and Truffle Butter $29
This was the first time we'd seen this cut served whole and not cut into thin slices. It was tasty and the truffles and morels lent a pleasant earthiness to the dish.

Cheese $13
This was the most pathetic cheese plate we've ever seen. It came to about $3 per bite. Although the cheeses were tasty, they were all pasteurized and the portions were so small. A bad note to end on.
