Dinner at B Restaurant, San Francisco, CA

We went back to B today. The service was great--they graciously accomodated our friends' 2 year old and they took our uneaten soup off the bill without our even complaining.

Spicy Chicken Wings $7
The sauce was very tomato-y, which was a bit strange, and the wings were large and meaty.

French Onion Soup $7
Totally flavorless and the onions were not cooked enough.

Cheese Plate $12
The cheeses were very good, but the fruit was a bit past it's prime.

Lunch at Mayflower, San Francisco, CA

Whenever we are in the Richmond we like to grab some delicious dim sum at Mayflower. We got there late, when the carts were no longer going around, so we ordered instead, which may have been better since it seemed fresher and came out fast. The whole feast only came to $35 total.

Stuffed Tofu
This was the only stinker of the bunch. The tofu itself was fine, but the stuffing was firm and bland and the sauce was also very bland.

Stuffed Tofu Skins
Totally delicious. Tender skins stuffed with meat and veggies. Less oily than usual.

Spareribs with Black Bean Sauce
Very tender today, with a good sauce.

Sui Mai
The skins came off very easily today, which is good, since we try to limit the carbs.

Har Gow
A bit too much filler, but very fresh.

Clams
The clams themselves were good, but the sauce was too gelatinous.

Beef Stew with Turnips
OK, but now great.

Dinner at Jeanty at Jack's, San Francisco, CA

We headed to Jeanty at Jack's after some post-work poker with some co-workers. Jeanty is not only a great French bistro, but it is one of the only restaurants open late in the financial district. Again, it did not disappoint.

Whipped Foie Gras on Toast (gratuit)
Although we hadn't noticed a delay, our waiter appeared with apologies that our appetizers were taking a while and these little treats. The foie was light and airy and these were a perfect way to start off a nice French meal.

Tomato Bisque $9.50
The winner of our best soup of 2006 away, this soup never fails to impress. It is creamy, tomatoey and has a perfectly golden pasty crust that's a pleasure to break into with your spoon--almost like opening a present. The before picture is above, the after is below.

Escargots $10.50
These are tender and thoroughly drenched in herbed garlic butter. Yum. Giao felt they tasted a bit off, but Alexis thought they were fine, and both of us felt fine the next day.

Mussels $17.50
Wow. These were the biggest, plumpest mussels we've seen in a while. We demolished them. And the sauce was a masterpiece of it's own, definitely worth sopping up with bread.

Lunch at Work

From Brandy Ho's:

Wonton Soup
The wontons are too doughy and not meaty enough. This was just ok.

Whole Steamed Trout
This steamed fish is probably the best thing that Brandy Ho's has to offer. It is steamed in tons of scallions and ginger, and a nice soy broth.

We were still a bit hungry after our fish, so we stopped at Carl's Jr.:

5-Piece Chicken Fingers $5
The nice thing about these is that they are actual, not reconstituted, chicken. The bad thing is that the breading is so thick, you kind of need to pick it off.

Dinner at Plumpjack Cafe, San Francisco, CA

We headed to Plumpjack for a second time, this time with our friend L and his brother, whom we'd never met. Plumpjack was great once again. The food was wonderful, and service was friendly and on point. A great experience all around. We apologize in advance for the fairly vague descriptions below. We'd had a couple of drinks by the time we made it to dinner and forgot to take tasting notes. Most of what we remember is that all of the food was really, really good.

Amuse Buche (gratuit)
We don't exactly remember what this was, but we do remember that it was very tasty.

Foie Gras $14
A thin slice served on an upended brioche sandwich. Very tasty.

Veal Sweetbread Dumplings $13
Served with snails, spring Onion and lettuce sauce with garlic and licorice. Absolutely wonderful. You rarely see sweetbreads prepared in any way except sauteed or fried, so this was a nice change.

Fish $25
We don't remember what kind of fish this was the skin was nice and crispy, the flesh was tender and it was totally delicious.

Steak $34
Perfectly cooked, very tender and served with a beautiful sauce.

Snack at Harlot, Catered by Sushi Groove, San Francisco, CA

We went to a party at Harlot, a newish bar we hadn't previously been to. The decor was simple and modern, and very dark. The food was pretty standard.

Wakame Salad, Edamame, Sushi
All standard, decent Japanese food.

Dinner at Tsunami, San Francisco, CA

After our last film festival movie, we went for sushi at a place near our friend's house. It was a bit too trendy without the food to back it up. And it was expensive for small portions.

Edamame $3
Standard.

Wakame Salad $5
This was sort of ridiculous. When I order wamake, I want lots of seaweed, not seaweed on greens. Trend over authenticity just doesn't work.

Tuna Carpaccio $13
Covered in 2 kinds of roe, this thinly sliced tuna was actually very good. We couldn't taste the truffle oil that supposedly seasoned the dish.

Ahi Tuna Poke $12
Although tasty, a very small portion and again, served on purposeless mixed greens.

16 Piece Sashimi $30
This was very good. The selection was better than expected and everything was very fresh.

Fried Tofu and Mushroom Appetizer $8
This was very, very good. The mushroom sauce contained enoki and shitakes and provided a nice texture contrast to the crispy fried tofu. The grated daikon added a nice bite.

Dinner at Home

Braised Lamb Shanks, Fennel and Brussel Sprouts
A tasty, hearty, totally hands-off dinner, even if the cooking time takes a while.

-1 lb brussel sprouts, trimmed and halved
-1 fennel bulb, chopped
-1 head garlic, peeled
-2 lamb shanks
-2 cans chicken broth
-salt and pepper to taste

Season the lamb shanks with salt and pepper and brown for a few minutes in a hot frying pan. Remoce and place in a large baking dish with the garlic and the fennel. Pour the chicken broth over the top and put in a 350 oven. Bake for 1 hour, turning lamb occasionally. Then add the brussel sprouts and bake for another hour, or until the lamb shanks are tender.

Salmon Salad Lettuce Wraps
Sometimes salmon salad seems better than tuna...

-3 cans salmon, drained
-1/4 cup mayo
-2 tb capers
-juice of 1/2 lemon
-pepper to taste

Mix it all up and serve it in large lettuce leaves.

From Mixt Greens:

Filet Mignon, Baby Spinach, Tomatos, Bacon and Cucumbers with Blue Cheese Dressing

Picnic Brunch in the Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco, CA

It was such a beautiful day, we just had to have a picnic, so we walked to the park, shared a bottle of Prosecco, ate and lounged and read in the sun. It was perfect.

Smoked Trout

Low Carb Crackers

Compte Cheese

More Cheese
Can't remember what this was called, but it was very much like a very ripe camembert and it was very good.

Fage Yorgurt with Vanilla and a Bit of Splenda
A perfect dipping sauce for fresh berries.

Fresh Strawberries and Blackberries

From our vantage point in the park we could see the lines for Bread Papa's, a Japanese import in the form of a cream puff shop. We couldn't resist, so we got a chocolate cream puff to split. We wanted the green tea flavor, but that wasn't available this week. The cream puff was a little less creamy and a little more pudding-y than expected, which is actually a good thing since we won't be too tempted to return.
