Hiatus for Vacation

We'll be on a cruise until Sunday the 2nd of July. Check back then to see copious amounts of over-indulgent cruise food.

Newport Seafood Resaurant, Rowland Heights, CA

After leaving the airport, we went out for a real dinner at a seafood place that Giao's mom knew of. The whole meal, for 5 people, was about $220, but it was a very plentiful meal, and quite good.

Whole Fish
Not as flavorful or tender as it looked.

Pea Sprouts with Garlic
Crunchy and tender at the same time, and lots of garlic. Yum.

Geoduck Soup
The broth was not that flavorful and the tofu didn't add much, but the geoduck was tender.

Clams with Basil and Chili Peppers
These were quite possibly the best clams we've ever had. They were huge and plump and very fresh.

Geoduck with Bean Sprouts and Basil
The geoduck was a bit tough, but the sauce was nice.

Lobster in Scallion Sauce
This was a HUGE plate of lobster (probably a foot and a helf in diameter, stacked 8 inches high) and the sauce was full of garlic, scallions and lobster eggs. Very, very good.

Lunch from McDonald's, LAX Airport

Our cruise departed from Long Beach, CA, and we were going to meet Giao's parent's, who were flying in from Philly, at LAX. Although our flight was supposed to arrive 2 hours after theirs, in fact, theirs was late and we ended up waiting in the airport for them for what seemed like quite a while to our hungry stomachs. We were so hungry when they finally arrived, that we shamefully asked Giao's mom to pick us up some McDonald's when she got off the plane. Neither of us had actually eaten McDonald's food in years, and although this greasy meal did fill our stomachs, we will probably not be eating at another McDonald's for many years to come.

Low Carb Double Cheeseburger
Best to wolf it down as quickly as possible.

Chicken Nuggets
Slightly cardboard-esque, but edible when dipped in BBQ sauce.

Dinner at Home

Chili Rubbed Baby Back Ribs

Asparagus with Trumpet Mushrooms and Pine Nuts
The inspiration for this dish was trying to use the remaining vegetables in the fridge prior to going on vacation--but it actually was quite tasty.

-1 lb asparagus, cut in 1 inch pieces
-1/4 cup pine nuts
-3 trumpet mushrooms, thinly sliced
-squeeze of lemon
-salt and pepper to taste

Sautee all ingredients until browned.

Lunch from Smart Cart (?), San Francisco, CA

Yet another catered in lunch at work...

Roasted Chicken with Salad
The leg was decent and flavorful. The breast was so dry we literally spit it out. The salad was not bad.

Breakfast from Katz' Bagels, San Francisco, CA

We had to be at work early today, so we picked up some (low carb) bagels on the way.

Low Carb Bagels with Lox and all the trimmings $6
Although I asked for extra cream cheese, when you are not in NYC they can never seem to put enough on. The bagel was not too bad for a bagel with only 9 carbs, but it was not a "real" bagel either.

Dinner from Zante's Pizza, San Francisco, CA

Dinner was catered in at work from Zante's, a strange little place that serves Indian food and Indian pizza. We've never had the pizza, but the Indian food isn't bad.

Tandoori Chicken
Not great, but certainly decent.

Lunch from California Pizza Kitchen and Mehfil Indian Cuisine, San Francisco, CA

Lunch was catered in at work from California Pizza Kitchen...

Chicken Caesar Salad
Not nearly enought chicken.

Bacon Gorgonzola Salad
Actually not that bad, although we could have done without the cabbage.

Previous Post

but Giao is currently anti-salad, so he later ordered from Mehfil Indian Cuisine.

Chicken Mahkni
As good as always.

Saag Paneer
Also very good, if oddly creamy, as usual.

Dinner from Brandy Ho's, San Francisco, CA

After working late, we didn't get home until 10:30 and realized we had better order some food because we were too tired to cook. San Francisco is not known for late restaurants, so Brandy Ho's was one of our only options, but a good one.

Chicken with String Beans $7
Satly and spicy.

Spicy Beef $7
This was a little less than satisfying, actually. Not enough flavor.

Harvest Tofu with Cabbage $5
Subtle and nice.

Hot and Sour Soup $2.50
Good. Not too gelatinous.

Lunch at Cafe Claude, San Francisco, CA

Steak Tartare
This was actually quite good, somewhere between Bix and Tartare. And they didn't mix it for you and left you to your own devices.

Arugula Salad
Decent.

Lunch at Ozumo in San Francisco, CA

Giao had lunch with one of our bosses as Ozumo, a highly overrated and very expensive sushi place in downtown SF. We are not really sure why the people we work with beleive this place to be the epitome of sushi. It is chi-chi for sure, but the sushi is just average.

Assorted Sashimi
Fresh, but nothing special.

Miso Soup
Standard.

Edamame

Shiro Maguro Sashimi
Decent.
