Dinner at City Beach, Fremont, CA

We went to a friend's wedding reception, held at the City Beach Sports Club in Fremont and catered by them as well (or at least we assume).

Mini Chicken Soft Taco
Flavorless.

Chicken Wings
Tiny, but tasty.

Carrot Sticks and Ranch Dip
Standard.

BBQ Ribs, BBQ Chicken, Caesar Salad and Cheesy Garlic Bread
The meat of the ribs was very tender, but they had a lot of cartiledge in them--something Giao liked but Alexis did not. The dark pieces of chicken were quite good, but the white meat was a bit dry. The caesar didn't really taste like a caesar and the cheesy garlic bread was actually very good.

Breakfast at Louisiana Famous Fried Chicken, San Francisco, CA

We've been eyeing Louisiana Fried Chicken every time we go to Tu Lan, as it's located on 6th street, just a few doors down. For some reason, we woke up craving fried chicken, so we decided to give it a shot. We found that we actually liked it better than KFC, as the meat was not as salty, but was just as tender and juicy.

10 Piece Dark Meat $14
A bit pricy, but juicy, succulent, tender meat, worth going back for.

Dinner at Shalimar, San Francisco, CA

Sufficiently buzzed, we were very pleased to find ourselves directly across the street from Shalimar, a very tasty, very cheap, open late, all around wonderful Indian Restaurant. I'm not sure of the cost breakdown, but the entire meal came to only $35 and stuffed the bellies of 3 hungry people.

Garlic Naan
Not as good as Mehfil's, but still pretty darn tasty. Stretchy and light.

Tandoori Chicken
This may be the best tandoori chicken in the city. Bright flavors and juicy meat with a perfect amount of spice.

Chicken Tikka Masala
Would have been better if dark meat was used, but the sauce itself was delicious.

Chicken Meatballs
Tender, not-too-dense, fairly large meatballs in a creamy, tomato-y sauce very similar in taste to the chicken tikka masala sauce.

Saag Paneer
Flavorful, perfectly salted saag.

Lunch at Mijita, San Francisco, CA

It was such a nice day, we decided to forget our bagged lunch and head to the Ferry building for some al fresco dining at Mijita. As usual, it did not disappoint.

Meatball Soup $7
This was basically a tasty tortilla soup, but with meatballs. A very large bowl for the price.

Crispy Chicken Tacos $7
These most closely resembled taquitos and were slathered with sour cream and avocado sauce and sprinkled with queso fresca. They were a daily special.

Carnitas Taco $4
Small, but packed with flavor. The tender meat is matched with fresh cilantro and onion and pickled carrots and jalepenos.

Queso Fundido $5
This was a bit oilier than usual, but you still can't go wrong with melted cheese and chorizo. We think it was more greasy because there was more chorizo than usual.

Dinner at Home

Garlic Shrimp and Sauteed Brocollini
Another quick, weeknight meal. And since shrimp thaw so quickly in a bowl of water, this is a great option if you forget to take something out of the freezer earlier in the day.

Garlic Shrimp:
-1 lb shrimp
-1 head garlic, cloves peeled and minced
-1 handful cilantro, chopped
-juice of 1/2 lemon
-salt and pepper to taste

Sautee the garlic in a bit of olive oil until beginning to brown. Add the shrimp and cook until pink, about 3 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients, stir and serve.

Sauteed Brocollini:
-2 bunches brocollini, cut in thirds
-3 cloves garlic, minced
-salt to taste

Sautee the garlic in a bit of olive oil until beginning to brown. Add the brocollini, sautee a few minutes, then cover for about 5 minutes, shaking occasionally. Season, cook until tender and serve.

Dinner at Tekka, San Francisco, CA

We recently heard about Tekka, a very tiny, totally unique Japanese Restaurant and we knew we had to try it. Everything we had read was true. You show up to the address at 6:30, although they don't open until 7:00. There is no sign. You have to show up early, as the place has a single table seating 3 people and a counter that seats 7. That's it. Around 6:45 a middle-aged woman shows up with a few bags of groceries, and walks through the door, saying nothing and leaving everyone still waiting outside. A few minutes later a very old man also walks through the door. At precisely 7, they open the door and let you in, well, they let 10 of you in. The woman serves you tea, and Jeopardy plays in the background. You are given a warm, moist towel to freshen up with. Then the woman comes around and takes your order. There are no menus, just a list of the fish they have that day. We'd heard the omakase was good, so we went with that. It was totally delicious. The woman just keep bringing out dishes, checking in every once in a while to see if we were still hungry. The food came to about $70 for the 2 of us. The old man is the sushi chef and stands behind the tiny counter serving up sushi. The woman makes elegant, hearty, homestyle Japanese food in what we can only imagine is the tinyest of all kitchens in the back. Unfortunately, this was the first time in the history of SeeUsEat, that we've been requested to stop taking pictures. The reason given was that the sushi chef "doesn't like the internet". It felt a little odd to eat without taking a picture first. In any case, we felt we should oblige because 1) this place was too small to take pictures secretively and 2) this is the kind of play with "house rules" posted in 3 places inside no more than about 150 square feet as well as a signing insisting that they "reserve the right to deny service to anyone". (Rules like "no forks", "no soda", "no teriyaki" and "no tempura".) We'd also heard that the owners have a tendancy of kicking people out for disobeying. While "no pictures" was not on this list of rules, we didn't want to push it. We did get a few pictures in before we heard the official decree, so you can at least see the beginnings of our delicious meal and get a feeling for the place.

Clams in Sake Broth
Simple, delicious and very fresh. The broth was delciious in its own right.

Pickled Gobo Root
We'd only had gobo as a soup seasoning before, and we were quite pleased with the earthy, woody flavor of this dish. The sauce had a nice spicy/sour flavor.

Steamed Squash
This dish epitomizes what Tekka seems to be about. Simple flavors that remind you maybe no of your home, but certainly of someone's home. Also, the skin of the squash was not entirely removed, but the squash was steamed in such a way that the rind was not only edible, but tender.

Crispy Salmon with Cucumbers and Scallions
Yum, yum, yum. This was perhaps our favorite dish. It was fishy and rich and salty and sour and totally addictive.

And, here's where we get caught taking pictures, so, you get non-visual descriptions of the rest of the food...
Asparagus with Sweet Miso Sauce
This dish was a bit too sweet for us, but the asparagus was steamed perfectly and very sweet.

Sauteed Shitake with Asparagus
This was an incredibly simple dish of sauteed shitakes and asparagus seasoned with salt and pepper. It warmed the belly.

Peppers with Bonito Flakes
This dish of little long green peppers sautees, then sprinkled with bonito flakes was beautiful but a little too bitter for Alexis. Giao didn't think it was bitter at all, and liked it quite a bit. We both liked the way the bonito danced on the hot peppers.

Sashimi Platter
This platter was huge and contained tuna, scallop, squid, salmon, and a few other types of fish, as well as some seaweed salad. There were at least 5 pieces of each type of fish. It was one of the biggest plates of sashimi we'd seen and the fish was very, very fresh.

Deep Fried Meat Rolls
We aren't totally sure what this was, but it seemed to be thinly sliced meat and leaves of some sort, rolled up, coated with panko, deep fried and served with a sweet, teriyaki-like sauce.

Tofu with Eggplant
This last dish was a simple dish of fried silken tofu and braised eggplant in a slightly gelatinous, savory sauce.

Dinner at Home

Pan Fried Porterhouse with Cheesy Horseradish Cauliflower Puree
If you remember to thaw the steaks before you leave for work, then this is a 10 minute meal. The steak is simply marinated for about 15 minutes in steak seasoning and worcestershire sauce, then pan fried in a mixture of butter and olive oil for about 2 or 3 minutes on each side (for medium rare). We like to use this cauliflower mash in place of mashed potatos and actually, we like it a lot better than potatos.

Cheesy Horseradish Cauliflower
-1 head cauliflower, cut into chunks
-1 cup horseradish cheese
-1/4 cup cream
-salt and pepper to taste

Boil the cauliflower chunks until fork tender and drain. Return the cauliflower to the pot and add the cream. Puree with an immersion blender, then stir in the cheese and season.

Dinner at Home

Brocolli with Cheese and Sausage Sautee
A simple weeknight meal that's ready in under half an hour. The brocolli dish is one of our favorites.

Brocolli with Cheese:
-1 lb brocolli flowerettes
-1 cup shredded cheese

Bake the brocolli in a covered dish for about 20 minutes, on 400. Remove cover, sprinkle with cheese and put back in oven till the cheese is bubbly.

Sausage Sautee:
-6 chicken sausages (pre-cooked), sliced in rounds
-1/4 cup pine nuts
-3 large tomatos, diced
-1/2 onion, thinly sliced

Sautee the onions until beginning to soften. Add the sausages and pine nuts and cook until sausage slices begin to brown. Add the tomatos and cook until soft, just a few more minutes.
