Dinner at Home

Caprese Salad
This quick salad of tomato slices, whole, fresh basil leaves, and fresh mozzerella. Sprinkled with sea salt, pepper, balsamic and olive oil.

Italian Wedding Soup
Giao has been battling a cold for over a week now, so he requested Italian Wedding Soup as a fortifying comfort food. This soup is esssentially chicken broth (I used some beef broth for extra flavor), homemade meatballs, escarole, egg, parmasean and Israeli cous cous. Although my version varied from the Campbell's version Giao remembers, this was pretty good.

Lunch at Ariake, San Francisco, CA

Ariake is my favorite sushi joint in the city. Sushi Chef Jin serves up the freshest fish at a reasonable cost. The decor is simple, befitting its place as a neighborhood restaurant in its (a bit-out-of-way) Richmond location. If I'm coming with a big group, I'll ask Jin to serve up 'whatever is fresh' at half portions (so one piece of nigiri instead of two per person). Today, however it was just us, so I ordered some of my favorites, for a total of about $60.

Seaweed Salad
Although I have never had a truly bad seaweed salad, this one has a particularly delicate flavor.

Seafood Salad
Jin changes up what's in this everytime, but it's always good. A combination of fish, roe and vegetables

Hamachi, Mango and Asparagus Roll
This was one of the specials today. Although I have had better sushi rolls at Ariake's, the melding of the sweet-sour mango flavor with the fish and spicy sauce was quite good.

Sashimi of Sake, Hamachi and Kanpachi

Tataki (white tuna salad
Lightly seared, thin, tuna slices with very thin lemon slices, micro-greens and roe. Very refreshing.

Dinner at Home

Baby Back Ribs
These were parboiled for 12 minutes, then marinated in a spicy rub (chile powder, garlic powder, onion salt, Splenda, lemon juice, worcestershire, cumin), and finished in the classic Ron Popeil "Set it and Forget It" Rotisserie Oven...as seen on TV.

The whole meal--steamed broccoli, mashed butternut squash (with salt, pepper and butter), and baby back ribs.

Lunch at Work

We had leftovers of lamb, and tomato soup. In addition we hopped on the office bandwagon of North Beach Pizza and ordered their Buffalo Wings. I have never liked any food from North Beach Pizza, but Alexis always insists on making her own mistake.

Gross Buffalo Wings ($7)
Probably the worst version of this classic appetizer I've had the misfortune of eating. There was some sort of paste like flavoring that it was dipped into, that made the whole thing inedible. It was like they battered it after they cooked it. BANNED.

Dinner at Home

Pan-fried dijon chicken thighs with sauteed spinach, onions and garlic, topped with parmasean.

Lunch at Tandoori Mahal

Tandoori chicken legs, chicken makti (sp?), saag paneer and naan. The saag was better than usual, and we learned that what we thought was really good chicken tikka masala is really called something else.

Dinner at Home

Simple stirfry with shrimp, squid, broccoli, chanterelles, enoki mushrooms, scallions, garlic and tofu noodles. The tofu noodles were much better in this application than in our previous soup experiments as they resembled noodles more than tofu this time. As Giao suggested, I should have added baby corn to the mix, but we didn't have any in the cupboard.

Lunch at Work

Leftovers. Tomato Soup and Lamb.

Breakfast at Home

Fried eggs and Bacon. Looks the same as usual.

Dinner at Home

Tofu-Noodles, spinach and egg drop in a beef broth soup.

Leg of Lamb, roasted in a dijon, balsamic garlic marinade. Some pieces were too raw, but that is ok as we'll probably microwave them tomorrow for lunch.

Dinner at Home

Chicken thighs pan fried in onions and garlic. Cheesy brocolli. The gouda and cheddar mixture melted beautifully, and then the next second had separated into rubber and milk, but it still tasted good.

Lunch at Work

Cobb Salad
Mixed greens, tomato, red onion, avocado, hard-boiled egg, leftover chicken and bacon in a homemade blue-cheese ranch dressing.

Lunch at Work

Thick tomato soup. My mom made up this recipe: Canned tomatos roasted with onions, garlic, balsamic, soy and Splenda for an hour, then purreed with cream and broth. Yum.

Egg salad

Breakfast at Home

Fried eggs and Bacon. Looks the same as usual.

Dinner at Home

Tilapia baked in a miso, chile, lemon sauce.

Green Salad with Vinagrette

Lunch at Tony's House, San Mateo, CA

Once, again, Korean-style short ribs barbequed during football. This time I added chile to the marinade and it was quite good.

Breakfast at Home

Fried eggs and Bacon. Looks the same as usual.
