Dinner at Home

Balsamic Rosemary Chicken with Sauteed Zuchinni
The chicken was a tad dry, as we used white meat instead of dark, but the bite size pieces were tasty. Sauteed zuchinni is a good, no-fail veggie side dish.

Chicken:
-3 chicken breasts, sliced in 1/2 inch slices
-2 tb each balsamic and mustard
-1 tb olive oil
-salt and pepper to taste
-3 sprigs fresh rosemary, leaves only, chopped

Mix all ingredients except chicken to make a marinade. Then coat the chicken in the marinade and let marinate for at least 1/2 an hour. Then sautee over medium high until cooked through.

Zuchinni:
-4 large zuchinni, halved and sliced
-salt and pepper to taste

Simply sautee the zuchinni over medium heat in a bit of olive oil until tender and browned.

Breakfast at Costco, San Francisco, CA

Hot Dog $1.50
The Costco hot god has got to be the best deal around. A polish sausage with all the toppings and a drink for less than $2. Amazing.

Dinner at Scott Howard, San Francisco, CA

We headed to Scott Howard, one of our favorite places, and one that we hadn't been back to for a while for some reason. It was easy enough to get a reservation on a Friday night, which wasn't a particularly good sign. When we got there we found that they had completely revamped their menu. Previously, we had really loved the tasting menus at Scott Howard, and we found that they were completely missing from the new menu. The new menu was much more standard in form, with several appetizers, mains and side dishes, as well as a single prix-fixe meal. We were happy to find that the food was still tasty, but it is always a little disappointing when a restaurant is forced to conform to stay alive. Also, interestingly, many of the dishes we ordered seems focused, even if secondarily, on the tomato.

Crispy Squash Blossoms with Goat Cheese and Tomato Sauce $8
Tasty, but not as sublte and light as you expect squash blossoms to be. The tomato sauce overpowered the other ingredients just a bit. Still, you can't go wrong with fried cheese.

Raw Scallops $12
Very, very good. The sweet flavor of the scallops melted in our mouths and the texture was perfect as well.

Short Ribs with Horseradish Creamed Spinach, Fried Onions and Tomato Jus $22
The ribs were cooked sous so they were very tender. I couldn't really taste the horseradish in the greens, but overall, the dish was very good.

Venison $24
This tender venison was also served with a tomato based sauce. It was tasty, and beautifully plated.

Orzo Mac n' Cheese with Tomato Jam $5
The cheese sauce was a bit grainy and containted too much flour, but the tomato jam added a nice acidity that cut through the fat in the dish.

Lunch at Tlaloc, San Francisco, CA

Everyone at work really seems to love Tlaloc. For us, it's a little hard to find something to order that does not contain rice, beans or tortillas. However, if you are willing to pay a little extra, and try to coerce the counter guy to help you figure something out, then you can find a decent, low carb meal. The one nice thing about this place is the salsa bar, where you have about a dozen different fresh salsas to choose from. Service wise, they refused to take our AMEX, even though we know from experience that they do take AMEX.

Carnitas Plate
This is an appetizer usually served with tortillas, but Alexis ordered it with a side of guacamole and it was pretty tasty.

Fresh Guacamole
A bit watery and not enough acid, but the ingredients were fresh.

Shrimp Ceviche
This was composed predominantly of diced veggies, with a few shrimp thrown in, but overall, it was very tasty.

Dinner at The House of Prime Rib, San Francisco, CA

The House of Prime Rib is a great, very stodgy, place for prime rib, and prime rib alone. And, for around $35 per person, you also get seconds.

House Salad
The strange combination of iceberg lettuce and pickled beets is oddy satisfying.

English Cut Prime Rib with Creamed Spinach
A very good piece of meat and the creamed spinach, while horrible for you, is very tasty.

Dinner from Brandy Ho's, San Francisco, CA

For a late night at work, take out was ordered...

Steamed Trout with Ginger and Scallions and Pork with Veggies
Good, cleaner than average Chinese take out.

Hot and Sour Soup
A good, standard version.

Cobb Salad
This was a strange cobb salad, it had chopped lunch meat, carrots, cabbage, etc. It was not entirely bad though--there was lots of bacon.

Dinner at Medjool, San Francisco, CA

We went to Medjool for a friend's birthday tonight. We'd never been there before, but we'd heard only good things about it. Unfortunately, we found it to be incredibly overrated. The service was pretty awful. We are aware it was a tapas place, but they still should have placed the food in from of the people who ordered it. It was haphazard at best.

Grilled Baby Octopus $12
The octopus were tender, but there were only 2 of them, and the main flavor profile was salt.

Clams with Serrano Ham and Chili-White Wine Sauce $12
A bit scrawny, but they were pretty tasty. The sauce and ham was pretty good.

Hangar Steak with Sauteed Spinach $14
Pretty tasty, overall.

Brined Pork Tenderloin with White Beans $14
The pork was a bit salty and dry, and the beans were a bit undercooked. This dish was better in concept than in actuality.

Lamb and Fig Tagine $15
A large portion for a decent price. This was actually very good. The meat was tender and flavorful.

Lunch at Work

Salmon Salad
A tasty, quick, weekday lunch.

-3 cans salmon, drained
-3 tb mayo
-juice of 1/2 lemon
-2 tb capers
-1/2 onion, diced
-pepper to taste

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly and eat alone, in a sandwich, or over fresh greens. You don't need to add salt because the capers impart their saltiness to the salmon already.

Lunch at Yank Sing, San Francisco, CA

Yank Sing is good, but it's not nearly as good as it is expensive. In fact, it's about 4 times expensive as your standard Chinatown joint. It's good while you're eating it, but afterwards, as you are paying you feel the slightest tinge of regret. This meal, for 3 people, was $110.

Onion Cakes
Tasty and delicate.

Dumplings
These were horrid. Totally inedible. What was in them, we'll never know, but it was incredibly bitter and the texture was very mushy.

Har Gow
The shrimp seemed fresh, and there was not much filler.

Siu Mai
Tasty, as always.

Bacon Wrapped Shrimp
It's for items like these that we keep returning to Yank Sing, despite the expense. These are delicious, especially with the length of sauteed scallion that is also wrapped up in the bacon.

Scallop Dumplings
These tasted of pure scallop, not much filling, and were pretty good.

Spinach and Seafood Dumplings
Tasty, if not entirely memorable.

Stuffed Tofu Skins
Better than the standard greasy version. Light and delicious.

Crab Cake
Way too much filler.

Peking Duck
Juicy meat, crispy skin, what more can you ask for.

Dinner at Home

Garlic Shrimp
A 5 minute main, and a tasty one.

-1 lb shrimp, peeled
-8 cloves garlic, minced
-juice of 1/2 lemon
-salt and pepper to taste

Sautee the garlic in a bit of butter. When beginning to brown, add the shrimp. When almost cooked through, add the lemon and seasonings.

Snack from Balducci's, JFK Airport

We tried to buy just bread at JFK, for our pate, but we couldn't, so we bought a sandwich at the airport location of Balducci's.

Turkey, Brie, Apple and Honey Mustard on a Baguette $6.50
A pretty good deal for airport food. We ate the filling from the sandwich, then used the bread for our pate, below, which turned out to be a delicious snack.

Pate
What kind? We don't really know. There's a picture of a deer on the package, so we can only assume...
