Dinner at Home
Shrimp Scampi with Roasted Asparagus
Tasty, healthy and fast.
-1 lb asparagus, cut in 1 inch pieces
-2 packages shirataki noodles, boiled for 2 minutes and drained
-juice of 1/2 lime
-salt and pepper to taste
-1/4 cup grated parmasean
-8 cloves garlic, minced
-3 scallions, cut in thin rounds
Roast the asparagus pieces (seasoned with salt and pepper) on a cookie sheet on 375 until tender. At the same time, sautee the onions and garlic in a bit of olive oil until just beginning to color. Add the pre-boiled shirataki noodles (boiling removes the fishy odor) and continue to saute with the scallions and onion. Season with salt and pepper. Add the shrimp and cover. Cook for about 2 or 3 minutes, until the shrimp are just pink. Add the lime juice and the asparagus and mix thoroughly. Sprinkle with parmasean and serve.

Cod in a Cream Sauce with Roasted Brocolli
People say cheese and fish don't got together, but this dish proves that theory wrong. The brocolli was simply roasted in a covered dish.
-2 bell peppers, diced
-1/2 onion, diced
-8 cloves garlic, minced
-salt and pepper to taste
-juice of 1 lime
-1/2 cup mayo
-1/2 cup shredded cheese
Sautee the onions, garlic and peppers in a saucepan until soft and beginning to brown. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to mix thoroughly. Pour the sauce over the cod and bake, covered, for about 8 minutes on 400. Uncover and bake until sauce is golden and bubbly.

Dinner at Chez Spencer, San Francisco, CA
Roasted Cauliflower Soup with Toasted Sunflower Seeds $7
The soup itself was lacking in salt and could have been a bit smoother. But the texture contrast of the seeds was very nice.
Boulliabaise $7
This was more of a tomato bisque made with fish stock than a boulliabaise, but it was tasty.
Veal Sweetbreads with Mache in a Truffle Vinagrette $14
The sweetbreads were firm and supple and the sauce was amazing with the perfect amount of viscosity.
Seared Scallops with Hearts of Palm $17
The scallops were good, but there wasn't anything too interesting flavorwise going on in this dish.
Grilled Flat Iron Steak with Morels and Truffle Butter $29
This was the first time we'd seen this cut served whole and not cut into thin slices. It was tasty and the truffles and morels lent a pleasant earthiness to the dish.
Cheese $13
This was the most pathetic cheese plate we've ever seen. It came to about $3 per bite. Although the cheeses were tasty, they were all pasteurized and the portions were so small. A bad note to end on.

My Favorite Kitchen Machines
This immersion blender is my best friend in the kitchen. I use it to puree soups, to puree cauliflower for my cheesy cauliflour puree and the attachments are also great. I can mince garlic in seconds without dirtying my Cuisinart. It can be used for whipping cream without dirtying the stand mixer. I can make smoothies. This is thing is the best, and cheap too!
The Cuisinart Food Processor is also a go-to machine in my kitchen. Perfect for getting an ultra-smooth texture or hummus. Great for quickly chopping large volumes.
The KitchenAid Classic stand mixer is perfect for doughs and batters. Cookie dough is ready in seconds. It is also great for items that need to be whipped for long amounts of time, such as egg whites.
The Ron Popeil "Set It and Forget It" Rotisserie Grill is great for hand-off cooking. Perfect for ribs.

Lunch at Samovar Tea Lounge, San Francisco, CA
The Japanese Tea Service $16:
This tea served was served with a choice of any green tea--Alexis chose genmaicha , a very tasty toasted rice green tea.
Tasty and light, but a bit too salty.
Seared Ahi (tasty), Beets (blah), Seaweed (tasted of the sea, in a good way), Shrimp (well cooked and well seasoned), Fried Tofu (fairly flavorless), Forbidden Rice (nicely salted on top, but flavorless on the bottom)
Green Tea Brownie
Actually quite tasty as the bitterness of the matcha tea offset the sweetness of the chocolate.
The Moorish tea service was served with a very flavorful mint tea.
Grilled Feta and Vegetables (tasty, if a bit salty), Dolmas (very good), Chevre Stuffed Dates (delcious), Homemade Baklava (lighter than most, and very lemony).
