Roti Canai
Very flaky and stretchy. The curry left a little something to be desired, but it was still very good.

Lunch at Mayflower, San Francisco, CA

We had haircuts in the Richmond, so we met some friends for brunch at Mayflower. We arrived a bit too early, before the cards came around, but it everything was very tasty. The meal came to about $11 per person.

Fried Tofu
Usually this dish is not too great, but this time it was perfectly salted and very crispy which was a nice contrast to the silky interior.

Eggplant with Shrimp
A bit too slimy.

Fish Dumplings
Tasty and fresh.

Pork Dumpling
Decent, if a bit firm.

Tripe
The pieces in the bottom were tender, but the top pieces were chewy.

Sui Mai
Very fresh today. Yum.

Har Gow
Also very fresh. Lots of nice chunks.

Dinner at B Restaurant, San Francisco, CA

Ever since we had gone to B's opening party several months ago, we had wanted to try it for dinner because it had both bison and rattlesnake on the menu. Once we even made a reservation, but when we got to the restaurant, it was closed because they had no customers. But tonight, the place seemed to be doing better. It had a packed bar and the tables were about 75% full. We then found out that the menu was not nearly as intersting as it had been before. Perhaps their adventurous menu had something to do with their previous lack of patrons. Tonight, we found the food just ok. It was nothing special and I would not recommend going out of your way to go there. But, if you are in the area, it isn't a bad place to grab a drink.

Seafood with Chorizo $14
The seafood was well cooked, but the sauce was WAY too salty.

Beef Tartare $10
The meat was fresh, and the dish was flavorful, but it was not an interesting dish, and the use of carrots was a bit off-putting.

Scallop Sashimi $10
Although this dish was served warm, which is not particularly reminiscent of of sashimi, it was tasty. It did taste strangly of mariijauna though.

Giao had lunch out today...

Tomato Soup with Crab $8
The soup was solid, and there was lots of crab, but the crab itself was not very flavorful.

Tuna Tartare $12
The plating was nice, but the tuna was not fresh at all, thus ruining the whole dish.

Truffle Mac 'n Cheese $10
Very tasty. Truffle oil is always go good in mac 'n cheese.

Pan Fried New York Strip Steak with Blue Cheese Butter and Green Salad
The secret to a great sear on a steak is a combo of butter and olive oil. This steak is marinated in worcestershire sauce and steak seasoning before going into the pan. The blue cheese butter is 1 part butter to 2 parts blue cheese.

Dinner at Home

We decided to use the cookbook from Vij's Restaurant in Vancouver, BC as inspiration for a nice, weeknight feast.

Tomato, Ginger and Coriander Soup
This recipe was taken from Vij's cookbook. Unfortunately, I didn't have coriander seed and had to substitute ground coriander, which didn't work out so well. It burned and tainted the flavor of the soup.

Grilled Lambchops in a Fenugreek Cream Sauce
This recipe was also taken from Vij's cookbook. The sauce broke and it was a bit oily, but it was still delicious. We used a rack of lamb from Costco and it was quite good.

Fenugreek Curry with Paneer, Cashews and Asparagus
This recipe was merely inspired by Vij's cookbook. This was a light curry, full of tomato flavor.

-1 lb asparagus, cut in bite size pieces
-1 block paneer, cubed
-1/2 cup broken cashews
-3 cups pureed, canned tomatos
-2" nub ginger, grated
-3 tb garlic, minced
-1 ts ground fenugreek seeds
-1 ts cayenne
-1 ts salt
-1/4 cup veggie oil
-2 cups water

Heat the oil in a large pan. Add the garlic and sautee until beginning to color. Add the ginger and sautee for another minute. All of the ingredients except the nuts, paneer and tomatos and simmer for an hour or so. During this time, roast the asparagus for 20 minutes or so in a 400 oven. After the sauce has thickened on the stovetop, add the paneer and cook until soft. Pour over the roasted asparagus and sprinkle the whole thing with the cashews.

Steamed King Crab Legs

Garlic Butter
A head of garlic, minced, cooked until crisp in a stick of butter. Add a squeeze of lemon right at the end.

Chicken Noodle Soup
A nice use for rotisserie chicken and a quick meal on a cold night.

-1/3 rotisserie chicken, meat pulled off and diced
-2 zuchinni, diced
-2 carrots, diced
-1/2 onion, diced
-3 stalks celery, dinced
-4 cans chicken broth
