Dinner at Home

After our enormous Dim Sum lunch, we needed only a small dinner. We had a bunch of tofu that will be expiring soon, so Alexis whipped up a quick tofu and veggie simmer. It would have been a sirfry, but it is a little hard to keep silken tofu together while stirfrying.

Tofu, Brocolli, Enoki and Scallion Simmer

-2 blocks silken tofu, broken into large chunks
-1 head brocolli, cut into flowerettes
-1 package enoki mushrooms, separated
-10 scallions, chopped
-2 tb soy sauce
-1 tb rice vinager
-1 tb rooster sauce
-1 tb hoisin
-1 knob of ginger, grated

Mix all the liquids and the grated ginger into a marinade. Marinate the tofu in the mixture for 1 hour. Simmer the tofu for 10 minutes, covered. Add veggies and simmer until veggies are tender.

Brunch at Mayflower Restaurant, San Francisco, CA

Mayflower is a good seafood restaurant that also serves a good Dim Sum in the Richmond, near where we get our hair cut. Right as you come in there are large tanks of fish, which you'll probably be eating later. This meal came to about $40 for two big eaters, plus doggie bags of leftovers.

Meatballs
We always order these, thinking they will be good, but no matter where you order them, they are never good. The texture is always off and you wonder what's in them, other than beef.

BBQ Pork
Not very good. Too grisly and not enough flavor.

Spare Ribs
Very tasty--subtle and meaty.

Chicken Feet
Standard.

Clams in Black Bean Sauce
Would have been better if warm, but not bad.

Fried Little Fish
There was something wrong with the texture and the fish seemed to melt in our mouths in a bad, scary way. We didn't finish them.

Tofu Skins with Meat
These were pretty tasty and pleasantly not as greasy as usual. Oddly, the waiter told us "these have no meat, only vegetables" we said, ok, even though we really wanted the meat ones, but these were more like all meat, no veggies...

Har Gow
Fresh, with large chunks of shrimp and not much filler.

Sui Mai
We decided that Mayflower just likes to mess with vegetarians, because in addition to the "meatless" tofu skins, we learned that on the menu at this place pork sui mai (which also have shrimp in them) are called "mushroom sui mai". These were pretty good, and the roe on top is a nice touch.

Dinner at Dave's Bar, San Francisco, CA

After some after-work drinking, we decided chili-cheese dogs at the bar were a good idea. They were.

Chili Cheese Dog $3
Good for soaking up the alcohol in one's stomach.

Breakfast from Katz's Bagels, San Francisco, CA

Katz's seems to be the only place left in the city that still sells low carb bagels (9 net carbs each), and they are not bad.

Low Carb Sesame Bagel with Lox Spread $3
Tasty, and they actually put enough cream cheese on it this time.

Everything Low Carb Bagel with Lox and the Works $5
Lots of lox, which is really all that matters.

Lunch from Mixt Greens, San Francisco, CA

We've been walking by this modern looking financial district salad place for a few months now, and finally decided to give it a try. It is basically a made to order salad counter full of gourmet, organic salad ingredients. It was fresh, and the ingredients were interesting, but it was expensive for what it was. The clean, modern decor was a nice feature, though.

Made to Order Salad $10
Baby spinach, grilled chicken, bacon, cuccumbers, sundried tomatos and artichoke hearts.

Filet Mingon Cheese Steak $10
The meat was good quality, but the cheese sauce was weird and the portion was tiny.

Dinner at Norton's Vault, San Francisco, CA

We went to play some liar's dice after work and ended up eating really crappy (for our bodies) food for dinner.

Chicken Tenders $7
Far too breaded, over fried, tough=bad all around.

Fries $3
Giao claimed that he needed carbs for his still-not-so-good-feeling stomach. These were crispy, but also over fried.

Jalapeno Poppers $4
Over-fried, not surprisingly, and not very spicy, but tasty nonetheless.

Lunch from Boudin Bakery, San Francisco, CA

Alexis had to work through lunch and ate a salad that was ordered for her. Giao ate more Vegetable Quinoa Soup.

Chopped Cobb Salad
This was actually quite tasty. The bacon was crispy, the lettuce was fresh and they included peas, which was pleasantly surprising. The only bad thing was that there was a little too much egg, but that is easy to set aside.

Dinner at Home

Since Giao still wasn't feeling well, Alexis made a big pot of vegetable quinoa soup with a bit of egg for protein.

Hearty Vegetable Quinoa Soup
Inspired by both Alexis' little sister, who loves quinoa, and our travels to Peru, in which quinoa is a primary ingredient in many soups, Alexis decided to make a hearty winter soup with this protein packed grain.

-1 large golden beet, diced
-1 large turnip, diced
-1 large onion, diced
-4 cloves garlic, minced
-1 lb asparagus, chopped
-4 eggs, beaten
-1/2 cup parsasean
-1 cup quinoa
-6 can chicken broth

Sautee onions, garlic, turnip and beet in a bit of olive oil until beginning to brown. Add broth and bring to a boil. Simmer until beets and turnips are soft. Add apsaragus and quinoa and simmer until tender (10-15 minutes). Mix the eggs and parmasean together and pour the mixture into the soup, stirring vigorously. Remove from heat and serve.

Lunch from Osha Thai, San Francisco, CA

Giao still wasn't feeling well, so he ate some miso soup that Alexis had made. But Alexis ate the catered in meal from Osha at work...

Tiger Prawns
Garlicky and perfectly cooked, as always.

Chicken Satay
This chicken was a little stringy this time, which was no good, but the peanut sauce was good, as always.

Giao wasn't feeling well, so Alexis just made a little snack plate for herself for dinner. Giao at some leftover Brocolli and Cheese Soup.

Salami, Crackers and Ajvar/Goat Cheese Spread
The spread is a mixture of equal parts goat cheese and ajvar (an eggplant and roasted red pepper spread).

Dinner at Home

Since we had such nice tuna, we decided to have a fresh Salade Nicoise, which can be made with canned tuna, but is always better with seared fresh tuna. We also had some brocolli that was about to go bad, so we made some soup.

Brocolli and Cheese Soup
As a kid I loved the Campbell's version of this soup, which was basically a cheese flavored thick soup with a few bits of brocolli floating in it. This is the more adult version that favors the brocolli a bit more than the cheese, and is a whole lot better for you.

-1 lb brocolli flowerettes
-1 cup grated cheese
-1/2 onion, chopped
-5 cloves garlic, peeled
-4 cans stock

Sautee the onions and garlic in a bit of olive oil until beginning to carmelize. Add the stock and bring to a boil. Add the brocolli and simmer until soft (but still bright green). Puree with immersion blender. Add cheese and thoroughly combine.

Salade Nicoise
This is a classic composed salad.

Arrange the following ingredients on a bed of mixed greens:
-cherry tomatos
-marinated artichoke hearts
-onions
-olives
-sauteed green beans
-tuna, seared on all 4 sides, cold in the middle, thinly sliced
Drizle with balsamic vinagrette (1 part dijon, 2 parts balsamic, 2 parts oil).

Lunch at Home

Tuna Poke
This raw dish is popular in Hawaii, easy to make and very healthy.

-1 large sushi grade Ahi tuna steak, cut in a large dice
-1 tb each, soy, hoisin, rooster sauce, rice vinager, sesame oil
-4 scallions, chopped
-1 ts each sesame seeds and black sesame seeds

Thoroughly mix all liquid ingredients. Coat the tuna with the sauce and stir in the scallions and sesame seeds. Serve immediately.
