Dinner at Home

A friend of Alexis' from childhood came over for dinner tonight...

Zuchinni Frittata
Next time I will season this a bit more, as it was rather bland.

-3 zuchinnis, thinly sliced
-5 eggs, lightly beaten
-1 cup grated cheese
-salt and pepper to taste

Sautee the zuchinni slices in a bit of olive oil until barely soft. Mix the eggs and cheese into the cooled zuchinni. Pour into a buttered baking dish. Bake on 350 until top is golden.

Butternut Squash Soup
This was thick and delicious.

-1 large butternut squash, roasted and extricated from skin
-1 large turnip, peeled and chopped
-1/2 onion, chopped
-5 cloves garlic, peeled
-4 cans chicken broth
-salt and pepper to taste

Sautee the onions and garlic in a bit of olive oil. Add the stock on bring to a boil. Add the turnips and simmer until soft. Add the roasted squash and puree with an immersion blender.

Rosemary Roasted Pork Loin
This was flavorful and juicy and yet cooked to a safe internal temperature so as to avoid trichynosis.

-1 pork loin
-4 sprigs rosemary, leaves removed
-5 cloves garlic, minced
-1/4 cup balsamic vinager
-1/8 cup olive oil
-2 tb dijon mustard
-salt and pepper to taste

Thoroughly mix all of the marinade ingredients together and marinate the pork loin for at least an hour. Roast on 400 until the internal temperature of the roast is 140. Let rest for 20 minutes before cutting, at which point the internal temperature will have risen to a safe 160.

Fresh Strawberries

Whiskey Whipped Cream
Add a dash of Maker's Mark and a bit of Splenda for a twist on whipped cream.

Dinner at Jillian's San Francisco, CA

We needed to grab dinner before going to a movie, so we went to Jillian's...

Wing Platter $18
Kind of expensive for wings, but they were pretty good. The teriyaki version was a little sweet, but the standard buffalo were pretty good.

Steamed Mussles $12
Standard. Nothing special.

Bacon Cheeseburger $13
Also expensive for a burger and not very special at all.

Apple Crumble
They spilled water on our table, brought our entrees before our appetizers and we had to send back one of the entrees as the scallops were spoiled, so they gave us all free dessert. This apple crumble was sweet and sour and pretty good over all.

Baked Sole
This is a hearty fish dish that's full of flavor and will really work with any subtly flavored fish.

-5 filets Dover Sole
-1/2 cup mayo
-1/2 cup grated cheese
-1/2 onion, minced
-3 cloves garlic, minced
-1 bell pepper, minced
-1 handful fresh basil
-salt and pepper to taste
-juice of 1/2 lime

Sautee the onions, garlic and bell pepper together until soft. Add the mayo, salt, pepper, cheese and lime juice and remove from heat. Stir thoroughly and spread on top of fish. Bake for 20 minutes at 375, or until fish flakes. Sprinkle fresh basil on top.

Sauteed Zuchinni
Simply sauteed in a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper.

Lunch at Yank Sing, San Francisco, CA

We went to Yank Sing, the very expensive Din Sum place downtown today and it was very sad, as they were all out of sui mai. How a Dim Sum place can be out of sui mai, and not making any more that day is beyond me. The meal came to about $18 per person.

Tofu Skins
These were pretty good, if a bit oily.

Har Gow
Lots of shrimp peices, not a lot of filler. Pretty good.

Seafood Dumplings
These were OK, nothing special.

Chicken Feet
A standard version.

Soup Dumplings
Light and flavorful.

Deef Fried Tofu with Hot Peppers
Good texture, if lacking in flavor.

Dinner at Home

Garlic Basil Shrimp with Steamed Brocolli and Balsamic Vinagrette
The brocolli was simply steamed and drizzled with a balsamic vinagrette. The shrimp were sauteed in garlic and butter and a bit of lime juiced and fresh basil were added in the last 30 seconds of cooking. Very simple and very tasty.

Lunch from California Pizza Kitchen, San Francisco, CA

Another deliver lunch at work...

Chicken Ceasar Salad
The lettuce was a bit wilty, the dressing too salty and the chicken too pink to eat without fear of food poisening.

Cobb Salad
This wasn't too bad. Fresh ingredients and lots of bacon.

Dinner at Home

We were feeling a little under the weather and thus decided on a light dinner...

Roasted Butternut Squash Soup
This was a light, slightly sweet, refreshing soup.

-1 butternut squash, halved and sprinkled with salt and pepper
-4 cans chicken broth
-4 cloves garlic
-1/2 onion, chopped

Roast the butternut squash, covered in foil in a 400 oven for about an hour. Sautee the onions and garlic in a bit of olive oil in a soup pot. Add the broth and bring to a boil. Simmer until garlic is soft. Scoop the squash meat out of its skin and add to the pot. Puree with an immersion blender until smooth.

Steamed Edamame
We got these pre-steamed and seasoned from Costco, and just heated them up a bit before eating.

Lunch at Jillan's, San Francisco, CA

Another Sunday afternoon at Jillian's watching football in a testosterone filled bar. The food is ok and generally the service is too, although today was a bit spotty. I think they are a bit understaffed on game days.

Philly Cheesesteak $10
Giao, being from Philly, can attest to the fact that this sandwich was not a noble bearer of his city's name. There was far too much filler (peppers, mushrooms) and not nearly enough meat.

Calamari $11
The calamari was surprisingly tender for bar fodder, but sadly, there were no tentacles. The tartar sauce was nice, but the other sauce was far too sweet and snotty in texture.

Breakfast Burrito
Low carb whole grain tortilla stuffed with cheesy scrambled eggs and topped with salsa and guacamole. I nice way to start the day.
