Dinner at Home

Korean Style BBQ Shortribs
We broiled the rest of the ribs for dinner. Just a big plate of meat. Mmmm.

BBQ in Oakland, CA

We went over to see our friend/boss' new baby and have a BBQ. The baby was cute and the food was good.
The Whole Plate
See below for components.

Homemade Guacamole
These avocado had odd sinewey bits in them, but they tasted good.

Korean Style BBQ Short Ribs
We used our standard marinade for these Korean Style shortribs, but we got the thicker ones from Costco this time instead of the thin ones from Sunset Super. The thinner ones are more tender and easier to eat as well. But these were still good.

Bratwurst in a Spicy Onion Sauce
I don't know what the recipe for this was, but it was really delicious. The brats were juicy and the spice of the sauce and sweetness of the onions really complemented eachother. Yum.

Heirloom Tomatos with Vinagrette and Broiled Goat Cheese
This was not only delicious, it was also beautiful.

Late Night Snack from Little Star Pizza, San Francisco, CA

After a healthy dinner we succombed to a late night carb craving. We got pizza, which was doughy and generally bad. This was the first time we had pizza in probably 2 years and Alexis' second time having pizza since moving to SF from NYC. Pizza outside of NYC just doesn't even compare.

Sausage Slice $2
Doughy, but lots of sausage.

Pepperoni Slice $2
Too much dough and not enough pepperoni.

Mixed Greens with Balsamic Vinagrette
My standard viagrette recipe is 1 part each of olive oil, balsamic viagrette and dijon mustard. You can swap the vinagers and mustards (or other emulsifying agent) at will to creat different flavors.

Compound Caper and Lime Butter
A couple tablespoons of capers and the juice of 1/2 lime are mixed into a 1/2 stick of softened butter to create this tasty compound butter to slather on the fish.

Pan Fried Dover Sole
Lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, the fish is sauteed in a bit of olive oil until tender and barely golden on both sides. Use medium heat to avoid the fish sticking to the pan.

Miso Soup
A nice accompaniment to fish.

Hot dogs. We were in a hurry.

Breakfast from Noah's Bagels, San Francisco, CA

We wanted to grab a low carb bagel on the way to work because we didn't have time for breakfast. However, we found that Noah's had stopped carrying the low carb variety. Apparently our way of eating has finally gone out of fashion. We compromised by ordering regular bagels and "scooping" them (removing all of the interior bread).

Sesame Bagel with Lox Shmear
Good enough.

Decent.

Dinner at Home

Low Carb Shepherd's Pie
Alexis decided to give an old casserole a new twist by replacing the classic potatos with her cheesy pureed cauliflour. It was filling and tasty.

Low Carb Shepherd's Pie:
-1 recipe Cheesy Pureed Cauliflour
-1 lb ground turkey
-4 medium summer squash, diced
-1 onion, diced
-8 cloves garlic, minced
-1 tb each garlic powder, paprika, chili powder, oregano, parsley
-salt and pepper to taste
-1 cup grated cheese

Pre-heat oven to 400. Sautee the onions and the garlic in a bit of olive oil until soft. Add turkey and seasonings and brown, stirring constantly. When turkey is mostly cooked (not pink) add the squash and sautee until the squash is soft and the liquid has evaporated. Pour the mixture into a deep casserole. Pour the cauliflour puree on top. Bake for 20 minutes. Sprinkle the cheese on top and bake until the crust is bubbly and golden.

Lunch from The Cheese Steak Shop, San Francisco, CA

Today Giao and our boss took a cab to the Cheese Steak Shop to pick up cheese steaks for the office. Giao loves this place because they import their bread from Philly. And they produce a pretty good cheese steak.

Super Combo Cheese Steak (made by Giao)
Giao combined chicken, steak and bacon into a utterly delicious, yet artery clogging, masterpiece.

BBQ Cheese Steak
Alexis forgot to order extra meat and was very disappointed with her cheese steak.

Dinner at Home

Chili-Rubbed Baby Back Ribs
This is a favorite weeknight meal of ours because almost all of the cooking is hands off.

Cream of Mushroom Soup
This was Alexis' first attempt at cream of mushroom soup and it was very good.

-1 lb crimini mushrooms
-1/2 onion, chopped
-5 cloves garlic, peeled
-1/2 cup cream
-2 cans broth
-salt and pepper to taste

Sautee the onions, garlic and mushrooms until mushrooms have lost most of their water and everything is nice and soft. Add broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Puree with immersion blender. Add cream. Reseason, if necessary.

Lunch at Frisson, San Francisco, CA

Crab Cake $12
Good, but looked oddly like their pig feet dish.

Tuna Tartare $10
With cucumbers, black sesame seeds, savory cucumber sorbet and a spicy sauce, this was an interesting and flavorful take on tartare. It hasn't changed much in over a year, which leaves something to be said about the inventiveness of the menu.

Dinner at Home

Low Carb Quesodilla
We got home pretty late from Monday night football at the bar and we'd already eaten quite a few wings, so we just ate what amounted to be another snack. These were made with low carb tortillas (3 net carbs each) and lots of cheese, then pan fried. We ate them with jarred salsa and plain Greek yogurt.

Wings $3
These are half price during Monday night football. Terrible for you, but delicious.

Rotisserie Chicken
Usually this is pretty good, but today it came without the rosemary or roasted garlic and it was way too dry.

Cobb Salad
The chicken was dry, and for some reason they gave us vinagrette instead of blue cheese dressing. Brownie points for extra-crispy bacon though.

Dinner at Home

Brussle Sprouts with Bacon and Paprika Chicken
A nice combination of flavors. As a kid, Alexis hated brussel sprouts, but with the addition of bacon, she has grown to love them.

Brussel Sprouts:
-1 lb brussel sprouts
-4 strips bacon
-1/2 onion, minced
-1/4 cup cream
-salt and pepper to taste

Render the bacon and toss the grease. Add onions and sautee on low until soft. Add brussel sprouts and cover. Cook on low, stirring often so as not to burn the brussel sprouts. Add cream and continue to stir. When brussel sprouts are tender serve.

Paprika Chicken:
-8 chicken thighs, cut in bite size pieces
-1/2 onion, thinly sliced
-10 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
-1 tb paprika
-salt and pepper to taste

Sautee the onions and the garlic on low heat until carmelized. Add the chicken and brown. Add the spices, stir, and cover. Cook on medium until chicken is cooked through.

Breakfast at Jillian's San Francisco, CA

Another football Sunday morning at Jillian's.

Buffalo Wings $10
Pretty good, but not spicy enough.

Breakfast Burrito $10
Pretty good, and this time we got a salad instead of potatos, which was nice.
