Short Ribs and Leftover Cheesy Cauliflower
These short ribs are very tasty and easy to make on the broiler. They are best when marinated for several hours before cooking. Click here for the short rib marinade.

Very crispy and very bad for you.

Giao said these were good, and didn't seem reconstituted.

Dinner at Home

Pan-fried Cod with Lemon and Capers with Cheesy Cauliflower
The fish was a bit too dry, not sure whether we overcooked it, or it was frozen too long. The cod was simply pan fried in butter and capers, with a spritz of lemon. Click here for a recipe for cheesy pureed cauliflower.

Lunch in the park, San Francisco, CA

From the taco truck on Pacific and Sansome:

Carnitas Taco $1.50
Tasty little taco, edible in 3 bites. And they added the guacamole at no extra cost.

From Yee's:

Whole Roast Duck $10
A raw whole duck usually costs more than this. Delicious.

Dinner from Brandy Ho's, San Francisco, CA

Late night meeting at work necessitates some delivery sustenance.

Wonton Soup $3
A bit lackluster.

Steamed Trout with Ginger and Scallions $15
Tender meat in a flavorful sauce.

Beef with String Beans $7
Spicy, if a bit tough.

Hot and Sour Soup $3
Not as good as usual.

Steamed Dumplings $5
Decent.

General's Chicken $9
Not crispy enough.

Lunch at Good Earth Cafe, San Francisco, CA

Although it's a bit of a hike, this very clean and efficient noodle/wonton shop offers a variety of different kinds of noodles, wontons and broths to mix and match. The staff is very friendly, the prices are reasonable, the food is tasty, and they bring you hot mugs of tea.

Chicken Gyoza $5
Lots of meat and a nice crunch on one side.

Chicken Wontons in Miso Broth $7
Huge, meaty wontons, a nice broth and lots of bean sprouts.

Double Order of Chicken and Pork Wontons with Seafood in a Sweet and Sour Broth $12
An enormous concoction chock full of goodies.

Dinner at Circa, San Francisco, CA

Giao had a company dinner at Circa and they ordered practically the whole menu to share.

Chicken Sliders with Fries $11
Ok.

Angus Sliders with Fries $13
Pretty good.

Standard but good. Thick cut instead of shoestring, which is a change since last time.

Ribs $14
Pretty tasty. Fall off the bone tender. Not as good as Oola.

Lobster and White Truffle Mac n' Cheese $10
Winner of our best snack of 2006 for good reason. Totally delicious and not over the top, as Bauer would say.

Chinese Chicken Salad with Honey Ginger Dressing $12
Fresh ingredients, but the dressing was too sweet.

Flat Iron Steak with Garlic and Thyme $17
Tender, with a nice sauce.

Buffalo Chicken Drumettes $7.50
Good, but after we had the drumettes at Brick, these were not that impressive.

Dungeoness Crab Tater Tots $11
These sound better than they taste.

Dinner at Bong Su, San Francisco, CA

Alexis had dinner with a friend at Bong Su, our neighborhood, upscale Vietnamese place. Again, it did not disappoint.

Duck Wraps $10
These are really good. Duck, mint, lettuce and a sweet-spicy dipping sauce.

Tofu with Crispy Basil $9
A hearty dish. Fried basil leaves are delicious.

Jungle Beef Salad $12
Tender beef, jicama, cabbage, apple and carrot all seasoned with fish sauce. Very tasty.

Lunch from Seller's Market, San Francisco, CA

Another catered in lunch at work...

Tomato Bisque
This soup, when they have it, is very good. Tomato-y, creamy, very flavorful. The only downside is that it's a bit too oily.

Cobb Salad
Good, fresh ingredients, but a cobb should have a blue cheese dressing, not a strangely sweet vinegarette.

Lunch at Osha Thai. San Francisco, CA

Giao tried the newest addition to the Osha Thai local franchise in the Embarcadero Center and it was decidedly not good. Bad service and worse food.

Fish Cakes
Flavorless.

Garlic Shrimp
Totally disgusting. Raw and smelling of rotten fish. And, no garlic.

Giao was still hungry after the cocktail snacks.

Cocktail Snacks at Slide, San Francisco, CA

We went to an AdTech party at Slide. Lots of shmoozing, which is no fun, but free food and drinks. The food was catered by Ruby Skye, which is directly above Slide and apparently has an industrial kitchen, something we never knew. The coolest thing about Slide is that the entrance has a slide you can go down. However, Alexis was not allowed to go down it because she was wearing a skirt, which made her very mad.

Mushrooms Sauteed in Port on a Crostini
Not bad, especially when hot.

BBQ Chicken Skewers
Gross. The sauce to chicken ratio was WAY off. The BBQ sauce was two sweet and there was just to much of it.

Mac n' Cheese
Not very flavorful and not a very good finger food.

Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese on a Pumpernickle Toast
These were actually pretty tasty. The toast was super-crunchy and added nice flavor.

Steak Skewer
Tough.

Blue Cheese in Endive
Not very interesting, but a good finger food.

Smoked Bacon Quiche
Pretty good, actually. Served hot and very bacony.

Crab Cake
Not a bad crab to filler ratio. Crispy on the outside and warm and soft in the middle.

The Burger Battle

Our friend at Bay Area Burgers gave us his top 5 list for burgers in the Bay Area and for the past month or so, we've been eating our way through them. We asked for the top 5 list because we figured it was more efficient and healthier to take advice from a burger expert, than to try to eat all the burgers in town.

In our rankings we've tried to incorporate all of the burger element (bun, patty and toppings) to come up with an overall rating.

The Contenders:
Town Hall, San Francisco

Val's, Hayward, CA

Brickhouse, San Francisco, CA

The Rankings:
5. Brickhouse (unremarkable and expensive)
4. Eccolo (tasty toppings but the burger was shaped like a golf ball making it difficult to eat)
3. B Restaurant (a solid burger with the interesting addition of parmasean)
2. Val's (the epitome of your all American backyard BBQ burger, the bun was the only thing lacking)

and the winner is...
1. Town Hall--This burger won out for the conbination of great bread (a light, herbed focaccia), great toppings (fontina) and a tasty beef patty that was the right, size, shape and was cooked to the temperature we requested.
