Dinner at Eiji, San Francisco, CA

We decided to try Eiji, a whole in the wall sushi place in the Castro that's been on our list for a while. It was a great little atmosphere, with about 5 tables and a very friendly staff, and the fish was fresh. It wasn't better than Ariyake's though. So if we are going to go out of our way, we'll still head out to Geary and 15th as opposed to this place. Including food, tax, tip and drinks, the meal came to about $45 per person.

Rainbow Roll
A standard rendition.

Hamachi Kama
Very oily, but very tender and flavorful. The lemon was definitely necessary to cut the fattyness.

Sashmi Platter
The fish was fresh, but was cut a bit too thick.

Special Miso
This version of miso contained a fish head that gave the soup extra depth of flavor.

Seaweed Salad
Alexis' favorite, this was an especially tasty and fresh version.

Halibut Sashimi
This sashimi was sliced extra thin and served with ponzu, roe and scallions. It was delicious.

Oboro
This is essentially tofu before it becomes tofu. It is prepared when you order it and is basically what todu is before it is pressed. It was silky in texture and earthy in flavor. When the condiments below were added along with a special wheat-free soy sauce, this turned into an absolutely ethereal dish.

Seasonings for Oboro (above)
Sesame Seed, Grated Ginger, Scallion, Roe, Bonito Flake, Shiso Leaf
