BBQ in San Mateo, CA
We went to a coworker of Giao's house for a BBQ. She graciously hosted this nice BBQ for their entire (albeit small) company, plus SOs. Everything was pretty tasty. On this plate is pickled cauliflower, pasta salad, grilled sausage and grilled shrimp.

Too Much Sauce Covers Tough Ribs at Big Nate's BBQ, San Francisco, CA
We had a poker game after work and ordered BBQ from Big Nate's for our pre-game sustenance. I'm not sure how much each dish was, but we ended up paying $13/person and there was plenty of food leftover.

BBQ Ribs, Brisket and Chicken
The brisket bites were the most tender and flavorful part of the spread. The chicken was decent. The ribs were actually a bit tough. It seems that people always judge BBQ on the sauce. For us, it's all about the meat, so this was just too saucy and not tender enough.

BBQ in Fremont, CA
We went to a friend's for some BBQing. Our meal was intensely meaty, accompanied by only grapes and sunflower seeds.

BBQ Short Ribs
This was our contribution to the party. We made about 10 lbs of short ribs, which we had marinated for about 24 hours.

Korean Inspired BBQ Shortribs

Korean Inspired BBQ Short Ribs
You can buy these thin-cut short ribs at any Asian grocery store. If you are in SF, try Sunset Super. We were at a friend's house who has a nice, big BBQ, so we grilled these short ribs after marinating them for between 6 and 24 hours.
Marinade for 3-4 lbs of short ribs:
-5 tb soy
-3 packets Splenda
-2 tb sesame oil
-2 tb rice vinegar
-1" knob ginger, grated

Dinner at Palace Bar-B-Que Buffet in Sunnyvale, CA
After a long day of playing classic arcade and pinball games at California Extreme, we were hungry and since we were in the general vicinity of Palace, a fantastic all you can eat Korean BBQ joint, we had to stop in. Even at 8:30 we still had to wait for about 45 minutes, getting hungrier by the moment while sitting there smelling other people's grilling meat.

Shrimp, Baby Octopus and Squid
The shrimp are a bit hard to cook on the grill because the shell always ends up sticking and we always forget to peel them first.

BBQ in Aptos, CA
We drove to Aptos, right outside Santa Cruz, to participate in a beach Bocce Ball tournament and BBQ.

Fruit, Nuts, Chocolate Covered Almonds, Turkey and Cheese Wraps
Costco style. The fruit was very tasty.

Burgers and Sausages
Giao loves to grill and spent some quality time at this one. The huge burgers were quite good, although they took a while to cook. The chicken sausages were so-so.

Snack at Val's Burgers, Hayward, CA
We headed to Val's for a burger because we have heard that they are great. Val's is a tiny diner that looks and feels like the diner time forgot. Everything, from the counter to the cups to the waitresses looks like it is from a different era. And, since Val's has been around since the 50s everything most likely is from another era. In any case, the food was plentiful and well priced. The waitresses were efficient, yet friendly. We'd certainly eat here again, if we were ever in the area.

Papa Burger $10
We ordered the Papa Burger (2 1/2 lb patties on one bun) to split, but they decided to split it up and give it to us on 2 buns, for the same price. This was a real BBQ burger, with charcoal flavor and a great meat to bun ratio. The fixings were simple, no frills. This was the epitome of the all American burger.

Dinner at Home
We finally broke out our tiny grill that we bought at Ikea last summer and that has been sitting on our patio ever since. It was a bit difficult to get the charcoal going since Alexis forgot to buy lighter fluid and our attempts to burn paper resulted in ash and burning paper flying everywhere, which is more dangerous than it sounds considering our patio is 9 floors up and about 5'x6'. Eventually, however, we got the coals burning and BBQed up some nice short ribs for ourselves.

BBQ Short Ribs
These are the thick version, from Costco, which seem to be much fattier than the thin version of 99 Ranch. However, the flavor was good.

Fresh Strawberries with Chocolate Whipped Cream
Simply add a tb of cocoa powder and a packet of Splenda to the cream as you whip it to make this decadent treat.

Lunch from Big Nate's Barbeque
We'd been wanting to try this place for a while as it seems to be the only BBQ joint in SF that delivers. It was good, but we also burped up BBQ all day long, which was...um, not so good. This place is owned by Nate Thurmond, who is, apparently, a basketball player from the 1960s. In any case, it is big, BBQ and run by Nate, so I guess it is true to its name.

Pulled Pork and Ribs $15
The sauce had a nice spice but was not spicy, even though I requested the hot version. The pulled pork was tender and delcious. The ribs were a bit tough and not very meaty. If we ate sandwiches, I bet Nate's makes a fine pulled pork sandwich.

Korean Style BBQ Shortribs
We broiled the rest of the ribs for dinner. Just a big plate of meat. Mmmm.

BBQ in Oakland, CA
We went over to see our friend/boss' new baby and have a BBQ. The baby was cute and the food was good.
The Whole Plate
See below for components.

Korean Style BBQ Short Ribs
We used our standard marinade for these Korean Style shortribs, but we got the thicker ones from Costco this time instead of the thin ones from Sunset Super. The thinner ones are more tender and easier to eat as well. But these were still good.

Bratwurst in a Spicy Onion Sauce
I don't know what the recipe for this was, but it was really delicious. The brats were juicy and the spice of the sauce and sweetness of the onions really complemented eachother. Yum.

Heirloom Tomatos with Vinagrette and Broiled Goat Cheese
This was not only delicious, it was also beautiful.
